Today we have a guest post from an aspiring Higher Education author…..
The time has come when you want to move off campus. It’s exciting but a little nerve-wracking. Moving off campus is taking one more step to independence. There will be no dorm rules to follow – but also no dorm advisers to help as issues arise. It’s important to plan your move wisely, so you have a safe, enjoyable place to live.

Even though they’ve sent enrollment deposits to their college choice, the idea of heading off to college in a few months doesn’t quite seem real. Oh sure, putting on that cap and gown will help, but it’s those carefully chosen graduation gifts of college essentials that can actually make it real. So, the pressure’s on. What gift can you give that will practically scream, “You’re really going to college!”?

Today, bloggers across the country will unite for Japan disaster relief. Below is the article we’ve prepared, but be sure to check out the Bloggers Unite event website as well. All donations made through this event will be matched by the Ogawa family.
When I first sat down to write this post, I was all prepared to write about how to plan a fundraiser to generate funds for the relief agencies that are providing direct aid to the people of Japan. I had even come up with a few, what I considered to be, rather clever ideas for these fundraisers. But as I started to write those ideas down, I began to think of all the students who don’t have the time or resources that would be required. I found my thoughts turning to the images of the people of Japan that I have seen over this past month – not the pictures of incredible devastation, but the images of resilience and kindness that these people have managed to hold on to, in spite of their world being washed out from beneath them. I began to wonder if there wasn’t something much simpler and more long-lasting that students – and everyone else – can do to help in this situation and many others.

Let’s face it, being in college does not always lend itself to healthy eating habits. Late night study sessions, short breaks between classes and a million other things that eat up your time during the day can lead to missed meals and quick snacking on junk food. Add in the study breaks that often include those less than healthy dorm snacks and you can see why it’s so easy to put on the “Freshman 15″.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Freshman 15″. You may have even had friends come back from college heavier than when they left home, but weight gain doesn’t have to be a part of your college experience. It’s all about balance. (more…)

If you don’t stock up on snacks, you’re going to be eating the guy across the hall’s peanut butter out of a jar with your finger at 2 AM. I’ve been there and it’s a bad scene. Attempts to save money or prevent the ‘freshman 15′ by not buying healthy snacks for dorm rooms most always backfire. The truth is that you are going to get hungry, and you need to eat. If you don’t surround yourself with healthy choices, you will be forced to make unhealthy ones in the middle of writing your term paper–just the time when you need a proper source of energy.

So much time is spent focusing on being academically prepared for college that sometimes I think we forget that a student needs additional, often non-academic skills in order to make a successful transition to college. This is an area where your guidance can help smooth the way for your student.

Coming home from college for the first time can be a little odd. You may find yourself walking through your house as if it were a museum, thinking to yourself that’s where I used to sleep, my sheets untouched for months…there’s that bottle of shampoo I used last summer–still in the same place… If you’re like me, you’ve counted down the days of the last two weeks until you could be home, taking this tour of your life that was put on hold while you went away to college. But even if you aren’t crazy about the idea of coming home for winter break, you’ve gotta admit that there’s something wonderful yet eerie about being back at home.

College. That one word alone is the definition of being broke! As a college senior, I can tell you that no matter how many part-time jobs you take on, you are still going to be lacking when it comes to cash flow. It takes some longer than others to run out of their high school savings, but you’ll be sure to find out the true value of a dollar during your time away. So how can you make the last $5 you have for the week (and it’s only Monday) last until Friday’s pay check? I’ve learned some simple tips on how to find college deals and making that dollar go further.

Are You Going to College For…..
an experience, yes. Broadening your horizons and expanding your knowledge, of course. Ultimately, though, you’re looking for the key that will unlock the door to the career you desire. It’s the third week of freshman year, and my sister’s roommate has spent the last week and a half at home. When I was a freshman, I saw the same thing happen to so many of the people I knew. They drop out, either permanently or for only a few days, and head home to their bed and their parents. When going away to college, the most important thing to remember is that first semester of freshman year is the hardest college will ever get for you.

When you’re a freshman walking onto a new campus, you have tons of new opportunities that await you. Like high school, you have your friends, your sports teams and your school work but what high schools don’t have is Greek Life. Many schools have a bunch of different sororities and fraternities to pick from. Although I am not involved in Greek Life at URI, I considered rushing when I was a freshman.

As a sophomore, I am sad to report that the battle against the freshman 15 does not end after the first year of college. I still find myself tempted by the option of eating ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner, finding time to go to the gym can seem impossible when my to-do list is filled with reading assignments and problem sets, and it’s just too easy to take comfort in a bag of potato chips at 2 a.m. But after a year in college, my friends and I have learned a thing or two about staying healthy and preventing weight gain.

Today we have a guest post from JT Thome, COO of Textbooks.com………
A study conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that college textbook prices rose at twice the rate of annual inflation over the last two decades; economic issues make this even more of a “hot button issue” for 2009. This August, as students return to college campuses and begin to calculate the costs of first semester textbooks, many will be looking for ways to help them save money.
